Everyone needs a break sometimes, a return to something more basic, simpler, and more natural. For some city dwellers, facing the concrete jungles day after day can be as challenging as it is exciting. Sometimes you need to just drop off the grid for a bit. For those willing to wander a little farther than where the trail leads, it can be extremely rewarding. Nature houses things that are foreign to our largest metropolises. To get there, to experience them, you only need a few things.
As romantic as some of your Into The Wild fantasies may seem, it probably isn’t a good idea to head off into the wild with nothing but a pocketknife and some saltines. Having a plan, making preparations, taking precautions: all of these can ensure you have a fun and ultimately safe adventure. Common to most city folk, the internet is a great place to start for looking at what you might want to bring with you. There is a wealth of outdoor travel blogs on the web, detailing everything from what the campers brought, to what experiences they have. You might also want to pop over to your local sports-enthusiast or outdoor shop to ask around for some advice. The more you know the better.
Some important things to keep track of is how long you will be gone for, where you are going, how you will get there, how much food and water are you bringing, and what equipment or gear you might need. You might have to decide if you want to rent or purchase and off-road vehicle to get to those places that are well off the beaten track. Cars like the Jeep Wrangler have a reputation for being reliable and more than capable of handling all types of terrain.
Even beyond the cities borderline, you can still feel like you are being drawn back to it through a steady stream of social media and memory. If you picked a place to escape to that has cell signal (though I don’t know why you would) you might want to turn your phone off, or at least on airplane mode. You didn’t come all that way just to sit around and stare at a screen. Allow yourself to get lost in environment you are in. Don’t worry about what may or may not be happening back home because then you might miss out on what is happening right in front of you. Nature can be rewarding to the soul beyond what many people expect, but it is a two-way street. You can’t wait for nature to hit you. You must go and seek it out, and in doing so it will show you what it has to offer. Remember why you came out in the first place, and let go for a while.
Go For It
Nature can be as amazing and unique as our largest cities. If you do take the time to go explore beyond the concrete jungle, make sure you plan it out correctly and appreciate the time you are there. If you feel the urge to make a break for it, do it, and keep your eyes on the trail ahead of you.
